Ann Hopkins Avery is the Director of Professional Development at Baker McKenzie LLP (North America). Ann and her team work together to enhance lawyer performance through mentoring, learning/development opportunities, and career/performance management. She oversees Baker McKenzie’s Career Courses, which are multi-day in-person training courses, developed for attorneys at they transition into new roles, targeting key skills for their level, which help them deliver on significant changes in performance expectations as their careers progress. (Junior Associate Course, Mid-level Associate Course, Senior Associate Course, New Partner Program, and the Partner Development Center). Ann also oversees the NA attorney performance management process, the NA Associate Mentor Program and other professional skills and ethics trainings at Baker McKenzie. Ann is a graduate of The University of Wisconsin – Madison (BA) and The University of Iowa College of Law (JD). She practiced law at a Chicago litigation firm prior to transitioning to attorney professional development. Prior to joining Baker McKenzie in 2016, Ann was responsible for firm-wide attorney training at a Chicago-based law firm and served as the Director of Legal Programs and the Managing Editor of the Defense Counsel Journal at the International Association of Defense Counsel. Ann has been a Board Member of Girls on the Run-Chicago since 2013. Ann lives in Chicago with her husband and two children, and she enjoys traveling and running.
